The SAFEST health care evaluation examines the effects of either using or not using statins on survival without new cardiovascular events and health-related quality, in frail older patients who have experienced an ischemic stroke or TIA.

The SAFEST study consists of two parts. For patients who were not taking statins prior to their ischemic stroke or TIA, a randomized trial will be conducted (SAFEST-RCT), with one group receiving statins and the other group not receiving them. For patients who were already on statins before their stroke or TIA, we will conduct a cohort study (SAFEST-cohort) to monitor the effects of statin use.
